Kingdom of Theredun Reference

Description

A reference to a short story I'm working on in my spare time as I wait to find a real job.

Basically, this is the East half of the kingdom of Theredun, consisting of the central capitol, one of the surrounding valleys, and the great and vast Widelands. Theredun is a kingdom stuck somewhere between the Industrial Revolution, the Renaissance, and the 20's, with a bit of fantasy mixed in. Because of this they have trains, electricity, large land vehicles, and factories, but remain stuck with low powered rifles and swords as a means of warfare. This is mainly because of the theocratic rule stating that the god Cosmosulus commands every aspect of their lives, choking much creativity. There is also a fantasy aspect, for while there is no magic there are many creatures in this world we would find strange, such as the Soilslither, the Wild Sod, and the Bole. It also appears to take place somewhere in the west United States, the last place you'd expect to find an industrial theocratic empire. What's weirder is that the story takes place in the year 1402, which in our world would amount to modern 2015.

Briarfall - The capitol of Theredun in the center of the kingdom, Briarfall is a very large city in the valley beneath the Jagged Mountains. Briarfall is, for the most part, a very busy city with a high population, and do to the tyrannical rule, a very sad, starving, and homeless population. Work has mostly disappeared in Briarfall when various industries collapsed under the weight of it's massive economy. This is all due to a bloody Theocratic rule, headed by a hyper religious King. On the side of the mountain next to the main city in the valley is Upper Briarfall, the Aristocratic height of the city, and on the peak are where the most noble of Briarfall's citizens exist. Surrounding Briarfall are four manors, where the Hierophants who control the city under the Theocracy live. At the very top of the highest mountain sits the grand Theredun Castle, the governmental head of the city and home of the Priest King. There are two lakes in Briarfall, Glacial Lake and Lake Saxton, although Lake Saxton is far from full, drying up as the hard times continue, even though the beautiful Glacial Lake atop the mountain remains full year round thanks to being fed by the mountains ice.

Gunderwood - Surrounding the Briarfall city are the tall Jagged Mountains, where several smaller valley's sit nestled between the peaks. Gunderwood may not be one of the largest valley's but it remains a vast and open wild land, only a few settlements just beginning to eke out an existence, including the poor slum of Pedlartowne, a very poor little village on the edge of the woods, barely surviving on trading and farming. On the mountains surrounding the valley are two other towns, Overwatch and Hastor, although neither of them get much of a spotlight in the story; Overwatch is another small settlement, an old military installment that was abandoned during the last years of the Westward War and repopulated as a peaceful factory town, and Hastor on the other side of the valley is a considerably religious township at the base of a monastery on the near peak, and therefor is much wealthier than most other settlements in the area. The valley itself is mostly unurbanized, though train tracks and roads do cut through the valley so often as to pass resources between the mines and factories in the north to the rest of Theredun. While the forest is mainly safe, the Deep Forest is a very wild place where large beasts like Boles, gigantic ground dwelling insects, still live.

The Widelands - Outside the valleys is the expansive Widelands, a vast dry shrubland of Sagebrush as far as the eye can see. Mostly empty, save for mining activity and a few disused highways, it is a land more wild than even the Deep Woods, where the most unheard of beasts roam. Cutting through the vast fields of xeric scrub is Cripple Creek, which runs for miles from Glacial Lake out into the Widelands. A notable land feature is a pair of Mesas, Carver's Plateau, through which one of the only roads in the area cuts through. Finally, a hundred or so miles East of Briarfall, is the Theredun Border, where past is a vast barely explored expanse, hundreds of miles between Theredun and the next kingdom to the East. Since the two kingdoms are a step below enemies, almost no one has travelled between them in centuries, making The Expanse one of the great frontiers of the story's world.
